A team of researchers from Harbin Medical University’s Fourth Hospital in China has discovered a novel type of male contraception that can be readily reversed. The group details its technique, the ingredients that went into producing this contraceptive, and how well it functioned when tested on rats in a study published in the journal ACS Nano.
According to the study, unplanned births account for around half of all pregnancies globally each year. Many of these incidents arise as a result of insufficient safeguards done before sexual activity. They also point out that there are now just two methods of contraception available to men: condoms and vasectomy. From a male’s standpoint, both sorts are unattractive. As a result, the researchers devised a brand-new method of contraception: a hydrogel block implanted in the vas deferens that can be removed with a single ultrasonic blast.
The hydrogel has previously been authorized for various uses in the body and is considered safe. The researchers used thioketals in the gel, which have previously been demonstrated to dissociate when exposed to oxygen-containing molecules.
More testing is required to ensure its safety before trials can begin in humans.
