The decision to exclude Russians and Belarusians from this year’s Wimbledon is widely commented on in the tennis community. According to Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, such sanctions, even in a situation as extreme as war the players have nothing to do with it. I think that this is crazy – said the leader of the ATP ranking.
The official decision to exclude Russians and Belarusians from Wimbledon was announced on Wednesday.
Djoković said “I will always condemn war. I am a child of war and I know how many emotional traumas it leaves behind and that people are the ones who suffer the most. In recent history, we have had many wars in the Balkans and we all know what happened in Serbia in 1999.”
“But I cannot support the decision of the Wimbledon authorities because the players have nothing to do with it. I think this is crazy. When politics mixes with sport, nothing good ever comes out of it, says the 20-time Grand Slam tournament winner.” continued Djoković.
