Following the confirmation of the first COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began, North Korea has instituted a statewide lockdown.
On May 8, infections caused by the BA.2 sub-variant of the highly transmissible omicron strain were discovered in Pyongyang, according to official media.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, authorities did not disclose the number of patients but called the outbreak a “grave situation” (KCNA).
A government meeting chaired by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered “maximum emergency” control measures “to cope with the prevailing epidemic prevention crisis.”
Residents in some areas of Pyongyang had been subjected to lockdown for at least two days before the latest announcement, according to NK News, a Seoul-based monitoring site.
