Sánchez Proposes Linking All Social Media Accounts to Real Identities Using a European Digital Wallet

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez proposed significant changes to how social media platforms operate in Europe. He stated that these platforms must become safer and more accountable to address serious issues such as false information, hate speech, and cyberbullying.
Sánchez recommended that all social media accounts be linked to real identities using a European digital wallet. According to him, this step would be essential to combat online anonymity, which allows for the spread of fake news and bots that disseminate harmful content.
We cannot continue to allow anyone to hide behind a fake profile,” Sánchez said.
The Spanish Prime Minister also emphasized the need for greater transparency in the algorithms social media platforms use to determine what content is shown to users. He suggested that companies share these algorithms for public scrutiny. This, he said, would prevent algorithms from being misused to promote harmful or divisive content.
Sánchez further proposed that platform owners be held accountable for the content displayed on their sites. He compared this to how restaurants are responsible for ensuring the safety of the food they serve. According to Sánchez, the same principle should apply to social media.
The Spanish Prime Minister stated that these proposals would be presented at the next European Council meeting in Brussels. He expressed hope that European leaders would agree on these reforms to make social media safer, more transparent, and fair for every citizen of the European Union.
