Simplicity, progression, and regression- A. Heart
Hello again. Hope you had a good Easter. Today’s topic will be about the importance of simplicity and how complicated it is becoming.
Technology has by far evolved in every aspect. Being aviation, navigation, sports, work, or anything that you can imagine, human beings try to facilitate their actions, improve performance and be more efficient. In today’s society, almost everything is dominated by microchips and computers, whereas one can also note that most of our priorities are accomplished through the internet or some sort of software. We can order our daily needs online, we can find any information online, we can talk and meet online… at times even marriage is performed online!
It seems that this custom makes life easier with so much less hassle and waste of time.
The inspiration to get even better results tends to make people invest in greater focused effort to reach perfection, which often leads to other complicated functions for a satisfying achievement. This will certainly involve more work and thus the outcome will be more costly and high in value which at times the average person is not able to afford.
Without a doubt, we could not remain stuck in the stone age or primitive times, as I have stated, we need to be efficient while facilitating our life, but like everything else, there are always consequences to every action or accomplishment.
Computerized aid, most of the time, makes people less physically active and those who tend to depend on it so often will find it difficult to manage manual work or quick thinking to generate an instant strategic plan which requires teamwork and experience.
What I wish to point out is that during my old school days, for example, we did not just sit in front of a PC and google for any information, but had to look for and read books to complete our research or assignment. We had to use our brain much more to read between lines, absorbing and projecting the contents in line with OUR knowledge and eventually our thinking. It was not finding everything ready as thought by others and we just copy and paste.
This involved more use of our mind, also increasing the willingness to complete a high-grade assignment with greater satisfaction.
As I can see today, a child would prefer to watch YouTube see a cartoon rather than read a fairytale from a book. Even the feeling, is not mutual.
Traditions, cultural habits, etiquette, folklore, and heritage are amongst the subjects to become threatened. I mean, what’s the percentage of children wanting to hear bedtime stories narrated by their parent or granny before sleeping? What happened to that special moment when a hug and a kiss from the narrator would accompany the child to dreamland after the story?
Would the child be still playing video games till the late hours while his parents are asleep as they need to wake up early for work?
Keeping children as the subject, would you see some kids playing with marbles or skipping a rope or playing ‘cat’ nowadays? We were so happy and active in those old days. Little simple things guaranteed fun. Isn’t that our traditions and heritage are being forgotten?
All of this is linked and we should seek to maintain these simple things and factors that are very important for our character. At times we should feel and not just see, we should do and not only observe, but we should also meet and not just video chat, we should talk physically and not send a text message, we should embrace and listen to nature, not watch it on an HD smart TV.
We must find time to reflect and not let progress weaken our human aspects. We must teach our children to evolve as human
beings and not as part of a robotic system.
We need to find balance and share simple things that are being overwhelmed by our hectic lifestyle where everything should be executed in no time.
Wouldn’t it be nice to find a passerby greeting you with a good morning and a smile as you go out of the house for work instead of him having headphones plugged in his ears, head down, and walking as a programmed GPS device?
Wouldn’t it be heartwarming to hear your kids asking for your blessing before going off to bed instead of hearing them asking for another 30 mins to finish the video game?
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see parents and children pray together instead of chatting on social media?
One well-known philosopher, Lao Tzu, once said ‘Simplicity, patience, and compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

100% correct…in fact the need for basic fun and exploration of nature and the importance of life skills is thank God not completely dead…the longevity of the Girl Guides, the Scout Movement and the President’s Award (Previously known as The Duke of Edinburgh Award) are a beacon of persevering hope in a world gone mad with technology which resulted in complete individualism, which led to egoism, whic led to a laissez-faire attitude…which led to a world which has become a complete mess…and not really nice to live in!
