A significant number of fuel stations across Malta and Gozo are operating without licenses due to non-compliance with established regulations and standards. The Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS) has reported that these stations have failed to align with required standards, resulting in REWS not accepting their licenses payments.
Fuel station owners have voiced their concerns regarding the delays in documentation from their hired engineers, citing it as the primary cause of setbacks. Despite multiple final notices from REWS urging the fuel station owners to meet regulatory standards, the engineers have been unable to deliver essential documents promptly.
“The delay in documentation from the engineers is causing significant setbacks for us,” said a fuel station owner. “We are striving to comply with regulations, but the delays from our engineers are hindering our efforts.”
This ongoing issue has forced many fuel station owners to operate unlawfully, as they await the completion of required paperwork from their engineers. The lack of timely compliance not only disrupts business operations but also poses potential risks to consumers due to unregulated activities.
REWS continues to monitor the situation closely and is exploring further measures to ensure compliance and safeguard public interests.
