Karen Melchior – Inclusion of the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights

In today’s plenary session, Karen Melchior, a prominent member of the Renew Europe Group, delivered a powerful speech addressing the issue of abortion rights in Malta. Her impassioned plea not only expressed solidarity with the Maltese people but also underscored the urgent need for women’s reproductive rights, including access to abortion.

“we are with you” she continued adding “And for the women of Malta, we are seeing you, we are with you and we need abortion as a right for all women”.

Karen Melchior advocating for the inclusion of the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, has sparked debate and controversy in Malta. While Melchior’s message of solidarity and support for abortion rights resonated with many, it also drew criticism from some Maltese citizens who view it as interference in their country’s affairs.
Following the groundbreaking inclusion of the right to abortion in the French Constitution, the issue has resurfaced at the European level, reigniting discussions about its incorporation into the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Despite the complexity of navigating opposition from certain member states, the European Union is poised to revisit this contentious issue with a scheduled vote in the upcoming April session
