Kim warns N. Korea could ‘preemptively’ use nuclear weapons

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un underlined his warning to deploy nuclear weapons if threatened, while praising his top military officers for organising a large military parade in the capital, Pyongyang, this week.
April30, According to the North’s official Korean Central News Agency, Kim expressed a “firm will” to continue developing his nuclear-armed military so that it can “preemptively and thoroughly contain and frustrate all dangerous attempts and threatening moves, including ever-escalating nuclear threats from hostile forces, if necessary.”
North Korea has launched 13 missiles this year, including its first full-range ICBM test since 2017, as Kim takes advantage of a favorable atmosphere to advance his weapons programme while the United Nations Security Council remains divided and virtually crippled over Russia’s war in Ukraine.
There are also indications that North Korea is reopening tunnels at a nuclear test site that was shut down in 2017. According to some analysts, the North may aim to arrange a nuclear test to conjunction with South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk Yeol’s inauguration on May 10 and his planned summit with US President Joe Biden on May 21 to maximize its political impact.
