Alleged Vandalism Threatens Mosta Trees: Investigation Underway

In a sad turn of events, the picturesque setting of Pjazza l’Mosta was destroyed by an apparent act of vandalism that targeted several trees. The saga started back in November 2023 when Graffitti, a prominent group, highlighted the concern about the fate of these trees. Initially planned for removal and relocation, the trees were left in their original places after a public outcry and protests orchestrated by Movunmet Graffitti.
However, recent developments have cast a shadow over the tranquility of Mosta Square. On March 26, Graffitti took to their Facebook page to unveil alarming photos showcasing multiple holes drilled into the trunks of the trees. The organization has raised suspicions that this deliberate damage may have been intended to kill the trees, prompting swift investigations by relevant authorities.
The Environmental Resources Authority (ERA) and other competent bodies are currently scrutinizing the nature of the holes and examining any substances that may have been introduced into them. The discovery has sparked outrage among residents and environmentalists alike, with calls for accountability and justice echoing across the community.
Responding to the incident, the Mosta Local Council vehemently distanced itself from the alleged vandalism, asserting no involvement in the deplorable act. Furthermore, they have urged law enforcement to apprehend those responsible for this reprehensible act of destruction.
We also visited the trees of Mosta Square to see the nature of the possible vandalism, according to what we saw the holes are strategically positioned to minimize visibility behind the tree trunks. The precision of the perforations suggests a methodical approach, possibly involving specialized equipment, indicating a long-term and calculated effort by the author
As investigations unfold, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of our natural environment and the importance of safeguarding it against senseless destruction. The community remains on edge, awaiting answers and justice for the targeted trees that have long been an integral part of Mosta’s identity.
