European Parliament Votes in Favor of Abortion Rights Resolution

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have taken a decisive stance on reproductive rights by voting in favor of a resolution advocating for the inclusion of the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The resolution, passed with 324 MEPs in favor, 155 against, and 38 abstentions, not only supports abortion rights within the European Union but also condemns the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn federal abortion rights.

MEP Susana Solís Pérez of the Renew Europe party hailed the decision, emphasizing the significance of safe and legal abortion as a fundamental right. Pérez asserted that its inclusion in the Charter would solidify its importance alongside other protected rights.

However, abortion laws vary significantly across EU member states. Malta maintains the strictest stance, where abortion is illegal under all circumstances. The resolution urges member states to decriminalize abortion and eliminate barriers to access, highlighting issues in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, and Croatia.

The resolution garnered support from various political groups within the Parliament, including the Socialists and Democrats, Renew Europe, Greens/European Free Alliance, and The Left. Notably, MEP Arba Kokalari of the European People’s Party also backed the resolution.

MEP Heléne Fritzon of the S&D group expressed disappointment in conservative opposition, citing a longstanding trend of conservative forces undermining women’s rights and supporting anti-gender movements.

The recent U.S. developments have ignited concerns in Europe, with anti-abortion activists receiving support and funding from U.S. counterparts. Green MEP Tilly Metz stressed the global threat to sexual and reproductive health rights and called for decisive action within the EU.

MEPs anticipate discussions within the European Council regarding a potential revision of the EU Treaties to enable the inclusion of abortion rights in the Charter. This process, though complex, underscores the MEPs’ commitment to advancing reproductive rights across the European Union.
